Eco Sustainable Solutions supporting Robert Louis Stevenson site’s development by Westbourne Rotary Club

Eco Sustainable Solutions has shown its support for a community project at Skerryvore -a garden which was designed and constructed by the Bournemouth Corporation in 1957 as a memorial to Robert Louis Stevenson who occupied the house on the site from April 1885 until August 1887.

The house, which was destroyed by enemy bombing on 16th November1940, was named after the Skerryvore Light house built by the Stevenson family firm on the Argyle coast.

Eco has donated 2 tonnes of compost to be used to create raised bedded areas at Skerryvore and also used to create the borders in the raised wall ruins and foundations.

The project is being undertaken by Westbourne in Bloom and Westbourne Rotary Club.  Westbourne in Bloom created the organisation, ‘Friends of Skerryvore’ 2 years ago and is made up of a dedicated team of volunteers who will be meeting at Skerryvore on the 3rdSaturday of each month to continue to develop the site.

Westbourne Rotary Community Chairman and Bournemouth in Bloom President Reverend Chris Colledge said, “We are thrilled with the support shown to us by Eco Sustainable Solutions.  It’s brilliant how they are helping to support our work. The changes we are making are quite significant and the space is definitely being transformed.”

Eco’s Brand Manager Harrie Cooper added, “It’s hugely important to respect our historical landmarks and regenerate these spaces for our future generations.  The work that the ‘Friends of Skerryvore’ are doing is invaluable and they are creating a fabulous community space for people to enjoy.  At Eco we are extremely proud to continue to support worthwhile community projects like these.”

Eco employs 45 people at three sites across Dorset, processing local, natural organic waste each year which is put back to good use as compost, soil improver, fertiliser, landscaping products and biofuels. It treats 250,000 tonnes of waste a year and also produces clean power from solar power, anaerobic digestion and combined heat and power (CHP).

Dorset and BCP councils have produced a joint waste plan that estimates the local area will need to process an extra 232,000 tonnes per year of waste left over after recycling. The councils’ strong preference is to recover energy from this leftover waste ‘wherever practicable’, to minimise the use of landfill and to treat waste locally rather than have it travelling out of the county.

The A-Z of Angel Investing – an event to encourage more women into Angel investing

Dorset Business Angels (DBA) is to host a brand- new event with the aim of encouraging more women into Angel investing.  The webinar will take place on May 18th, entitled the ‘A-Z of Angel Investing’, and will be hosted by UK Business Angels CEO Jenny Tooth OBE.

Jenny advised, “I am thrilled to be hosting this event and welcoming a wonderful mix of women from across the UK, keen to learn more about the possibilities and opportunities in Angel Investing.  Recent research into women in Angel investing has shown that the proportion of women investors is very low compared to their male counterparts, with 85% of investors being male and yet the national picture shows that 45% of the nation’s wealth is owned by women. We are keen to investigate the reasons behind this and change the statistics.

“Angel investors come from a diverse range of backgrounds, but nearly all have one goal in common – they want to use their money and experience to help young entrepreneurs scale up their businesses to the point where they will achieve a successful exit over a 5-7 year time frame.

“The programme will include:

• An overview of Angel funding
• What to look for in a pitch
• Building an investment strategy
• Explanation of the risk awareness journey
• The opportunities and challenges as a female investor

Hannah Mazrae promoted to Partner at Saffery Champness Accountants

High Sheriff of Dorset shows support for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care

Michael Dooley FRCOG, the newly declared High Sheriff of Dorset, has visited Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and looks forward to fully supporting the charity during his term in office. He took time out to visit the hospice on his maiden official visit in his new role.

Michael said, “I am thrilled to be able to help Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. It was a real privilege to meet with the Director of Fundraising Tom Goodinge, Day Hospice Clinical Team Manager Debbie Tallick-Wyatt, Director of Finance and Operations Alison Dean and Trustee Timothy Lee,  to understand more about the challenges and opportunities that the charity has faced over recent months.  It was brilliant to hear about the fantastic new services and initiatives that have evolved during the pandemic and to learn that the hospice is doing such amazing work for the patients and families that it supports with life-limiting illnesses in the local communities of East Dorset & Purbeck.

“I’m hoping that my support will help to further raise awareness of Lewis-Manning, encourage additional fundraising and allow me to make introductions for the charity.

“During my term in office I am also looking forward to taking part in the charity’s Jurassic Coast Trek Challenge in October. It’s a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the beauty of our Dorset coastline and raise funds for a much-needed local cause at the same time.”

£2.4 million in funding available to help turbo-charge the local economy

A new package of grant funding is being made available from Monday 19 April to assist in turbo-charging innovative economic recovery projects across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

As part of the next stage of BCP Council’s Stream 3 Additional Restrictions Grant scheme, local businesses, business support organisations, community partners and Business Improvement Districts (BIDS) will have the opportunity to apply for varying levels of grants. 

Funding will be provided exclusively for projects which demonstrate innovation, provide clear benefits for the local economy and generate pride in the place we live.

To ensure the £2.4 million is distributed evenly throughout the business community, this scheme will be divided into several parts. These include:

  • The Bounce Back Challenge Fund. Grants of up to £15,000 and £70,000 will be available for local businesses with standout projects in need of funding. These projects must meet the council’s main criteria. The application period will run from 19 April to 7 May 2021.
  • In addition, businesses in the Council’s R3 Economy Recovery Taskforce group will be able to apply for grants. This group is made up of leaders in local business, retail, hospitality, leisure and welfare sectors. Applications close on 5 May.
  • Bournemouth Town Centre BID, Bournemouth Coastal BID and Poole BID will be able to apply for grants. Representing nearly 2000 businesses, these organisations play a key role in attracting visitors and creating a strong local trading environment. Applications close on 5 May.
  • Up to 10 organisations, which provide business support, will also be able to apply for grants. BCP Council has approached a number of organisations directly, however, those that think they may be eligible are asked to contact the council via argstream3@bcpcouncil.gov.uk to receive and fill out an application form. Applications close on 5 May.

Poole based, independent Mercedes, BMW & Jaguar Specialist, Star Tech Ltd has chosen Lewis-Manning Hospice Care as its charity of the year

Founder and MD Matthew Peacock said, “My grandmother received brilliant and invaluable support from Lewis-Manning Hospice Care many years ago.  She used to enjoy attending the day hospice. We really understand the amazing work the charity does and the impact that having a life-limiting illness can have on patients and their families in our community, but how Lewis-Manning are always there to help and support during the most difficult time some people will ever face. Our non-executive Board member Philip Warr is also a Patron of the hospice and he kindly reintroduced us to the charity after all these years.  We are delighted to be collaborating with the charity and can’t wait to get involved and to support in many ways like fundraising events, campaigns, volunteering and introduce the charity to our team of staff.

Bounce Back Challenge Fund – opens to applications

Today BCP Council has launched a new Bounce Back Challenge Fund to help turbo-charge innovative economic recovery projects across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

The Council will be providing funding specifically for projects which demonstrate innovation, provide clear benefits for the local economy, generate pride in the place we live and are deliverable. 

This is a competitive process that aims to unearth and fund a limited number of concepts from as wide a profile as possible within the local business community.

Businesses of all sizes and types (including charities) within the area can apply. They may award:

  • Up to £15,000 – for smaller projects or individual business ideas
  • Up to £70,000 – for larger projects which can include partnership or cross-sector working

The application period will run from today (Monday 19 April) and closes on 7 May 2021.

Launch of the Restart Grants Scheme

At the beginning of April, the government launched the new £5 billion Restart Grants scheme to be administered by local authorities.

Businesses in England in the non-essential retail sector will be eligible for one-off grants of up to £6,000, while businesses in the hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym sectors, which are reopening later, will be eligible for one-off grants of up to £18,000.
